Themed Wedding? What's That?
Oh, friends. They're all the rage, and with good reason!
A themed wedding is more than beautiful décor and a carefully chosen color palette. It's a statement that the guests will never ever forget.
- "Hey, remember that time we went to the wedding in that barn and they used mason jars for decor?"
- "Oh, and what about that time we went to that Hawaiian-themed wedding. That was a blast!"
- "My favorite was the romantic Italian wedding on Valentine's Day weekend. Those foods and sweets were amazing!"
- "I thought the wedding on the beach was the best! And the reception was amazing, with all of those seashell and candle centerpieces!"
You get the idea. People never forget when you surprise them with a theme.
My History of Themed Weddings

I've mentioned in prior posts that I have four daughters and all four got married between 2004 and 2008. Whew! What a whirlwind.
We celebrated each wedding in style!
- The first with a distinct red and gold theme, Italian foods and a formal cake.
- The second, a garden party theme set in the summertime, with light florals everywhere and a cake with pastel flowers.
- The third was a Hawaiian-themed event, complete with roasted pig. No, really! And the cake was distinctly Hawaiian.
- And the final wedding was a lovely traditional wedding with more neutral colors.
Four girls. Four themes. Four amazing days!
From Real People to Fictional
I'm a novelist, as I've also mentioned in other posts. And here's the funny part: so many of my novels are wedding themed. Over thirty of them, in fact. So, I've not only lived out themed weddings in real life, I've written about them dozens of times.
It stands to reason, then, that I would dedicate a post to my favorite wedding themes. And, if you'll humor me, I'll throw in a nod to my books along the way in this post, something I rarely do on this site.
Why? Because so many are a perfect fit!
I'm also going to take another liberty in this post: I'm going to link you to some foods from other favorite sites. Look for recipes from Storybook Kitchen (my author site), Backyard Texas Grill (my son-in-law's blog), and from two of my favorite southern cooks, as well. (Nodding at Julie from Back to my Southern Roots and Debby from Southern Home Express.) If you haven't visited their sites, here's your chance!)
What are we waiting for? Wedding bells are ringing and there's work to do! Let's dive right in!
Creative Couples, Creative Weddings

Modern-day couples are uber creative and it shows in their wedding themes.
The food you serve at a themed wedding can become one of the most memorable parts of the celebration.
Couples today are embracing creative wedding menus that reflect their personalities, cultural backgrounds, favorite travel destinations, or even beloved hobbies.
From elegant European-inspired dessert tables to rustic Texas barbecue buffets, themed wedding foods help tell a story—and give guests an experience they’ll never forget.
In this guide, we’ll explore creative themed wedding menu ideas along with dessert and display inspiration that can help bring each wedding vision to life.
Classic Romance: Elegant Traditional Wedding Foods
Some couples dream of a timeless wedding with classic elegance. And some of my characters dream of that, too! In my novel The Icing on the Cake, Scarlet Lindsey--cake decorator extraordinaire--has one thing on her mind: making her mark in the wedding biz. She's got the chops, and knows if she makes the right connection, her future as Galveston Island's premier wedding baker will be set!

Scarlet is a pro at traditional wedding cakes. And her expertise lands her in the middle of a lovely themed wedding.
Maybe you've been there. You've enjoyed a traditional wedding event, complete with all of the foods and decor you've come to expect at a lovely event like this. Traditional is always good, and if you're thinking about planning this theme for your big day, here are some of my best suggestions.
Traditional menu ideas might include:
- carved roast beef or chicken
- melt-in-your-mouth prime rib
- delicate tea sandwiches
- fresh fruit displays
- classic wedding cake with buttercream roses
Dessert table additions:
- mini cheesecakes
- chocolate truffles
- puff pastries
- hand-painted wedding cookies
- cupcake displays
- petit fours & macarons
This type of menu pairs beautifully with soft florals, candlelight, and elegant dessert displays. Here are some of my favorite traditional cakes.

Pondering cupcakes for your traditional wedding? Try these on for size!

I'm a huge fan of traditional wedding cookies, as well!

Rustic Country Weddings: Comfort Foods Guests Love
Rustic barn weddings and country celebrations often feature comforting, home-style foods. I featured a country-western themed wedding in my very first Weddings by Bella book, Fools Rush In.

Popular rustic wedding menu ideas include:
- smoked pig shots
- barbecue brisket or pulled pork
- honey bourbon country ribs
- cornbread or biscuits
- mac and cheese
- sweet & savory southwest beans
- potato salad
- honey pecan goat cheese truffles
Dessert table favorites might include:
Wedding cake styles for rustic weddings vary, but here are a few I've done over the years.

The rustic theme creates a warm, relaxed atmosphere where guests feel right at home.
That comfortable theme can spill right on over to your cupcakes, should you decide to go that route. Here's one design to consider. These are my cookie butter cupcakes and they're delish!

It also spills over into cookies! Some of my favorites over the years have been more rustic in appearance, (perfect for a country-themed wedding).

International-Themed Wedding Foods
Food is one of the best ways to celebrate heritage or favorite travel destinations. Couples often design wedding menus inspired by cuisines from around the world.
Here are some fun examples to get your creative wheels spinning.
Italian-inspired weddings
- focaccia
- Italian pasta salad
- chicken & gnocchi soup
- tuscan roasted chicken & veggies
- homemade lasagna with homemade meat sauce
- tiramisu
- cannoli cupcakes with whipped ricotta frosting
French-themed receptions
European weddings often have more traditional cakes. Here are a few I've done over the years.

Pondering cupcakes for your elegant affair? You'll want to start with my best white cake mix recipe (a doctored box mix). The possibilities are endless! And don't forget to check out my cupcake decorating techniques post to give them that finished look. I heartily recommend my marshmallow fluff frosting for a light, fluffy look and feel.

Beautiful, elegant weddings call for beautiful, elegant cookies! I've loved decorating all of these over the years.

Southern Charm Wedding Menus
Southern weddings often highlight comforting regional favorites. These menus tend to blend hospitality, tradition, and plenty of flavor. From savory bites and hearty mains to classic cakes and pies, Southern wedding food is meant to make guests feel welcomed, well fed, and right at home.
I featured a wedding like this in a recent book titled Mistletoe and Mayhem, which is set in East Texas.

The bride and groom are married outdoors and celebrate their reception right there, on the family's ranch, eating the foods you might expect at a more casual Texas wedding.
Menu ideas for southern weddings include:
- marry me chicken
- herb crusted pork tenderloin
- king ranch chicken rolls
- roasted vegetables
- cheesy potatoes with bacon
- green beans and bacon
- honey cornbread on the smoker
Desserts might include:
These menus are both nostalgic and incredibly satisfying.
Here are a few cakes that would be lovely at a southern wedding. (Can I just say, I loved making these! They're so pretty and fun!)

Cupcakes are always a huge hit at southern weddings, and the frillier, the better!

These would be so pretty at a southern wedding, wouldn't they? And how about some gorgeous cookies to serve along side those cupcakes or cake?

Golden Wedding Anniversaries
A golden wedding anniversary is more than a party—it’s a celebration of lasting love, shared memories, and the beautiful life built over fifty years together. The food and desserts for an occasion like this can be elegant, meaningful, and a little nostalgic, with touches of gold, favorite family recipes, and sweets that make the day feel truly special.

Tea Party or Garden Wedding Menus
A tea party wedding has a charm all its own—graceful, feminine, and filled with lovely little details that make guests feel treasured. From delicate florals and vintage china to petit fours, tea sandwiches, and beautifully decorated cakes, this style of celebration blends elegance with intimacy in the sweetest possible way.
It’s a perfect fit for brides who love old-fashioned romance, which makes it a natural transition to Tea for Two, one of the Bella novellas, where a Victorian tea party wedding sets the stage for love, charm, and a storybook celebration.

Menu ideas for a tea party wedding might include:
- tea sandwiches
- quiche
- fresh fruit
- salads (like my delicious pasta salad)
Desserts often include:
- scones
- lemon bars
- lemon high tea cookies
- almond shortbread with almond glaze
- pink velvet cupcakes
- strawberry lemonade pastry puffs
Beautiful tiered trays and vintage cake stands can turn these desserts into a stunning visual display.

Boho chic cupcakes are all the rage and they're the perfect complement to a garden wedding! Here are some fun options! Just change up the colors to match your theme.

From colorful cakes and churro-style desserts to savory bites with a little spice, this is a wonderful theme for couples who want their wedding to feel festive and full of personality. It’s especially lovely for outdoor receptions, spring celebrations, and weddings where food is a big part of the fun.

Tropical and Hawaiian Weddings
Tropical and Hawaiian weddings are all about joy, color, and laid-back beauty. Think breezy outdoor settings, lush greenery, fresh flowers, fruity flavors, and desserts that feel bright and festive. Looking for tropical cupcakes? My 3-ingredient pineapple cupcakes are perfect or a Hawaiian/tropical event!

Now let's talk about some colorful, tropical cookies for that wedding! I love adding color to wedding cookies. (So fun, right?)

Beach-Themed Weddings
There’s something so relaxed and beautiful about a beach wedding. With soft colors, breezy textures, and ocean-inspired details, this type of celebration often feels both elegant and effortless. From sandy neutrals and seashell accents to soft blues and airy florals, beach-themed desserts can reflect the setting in a way that feels romantic without being overdone.
I attended a gorgeous beach wedding years ago and it inspired me to write another of the Bella novellas, That Lucky Old Sun, which is set on Galveston Island.

This is a sweet, breezy romance (wedding-themed!) you're sure to love!
Because beach receptions work best with foods that are simple to serve and easy for guests to enjoy, the menu is often made up of lighter bites, hand-held foods, and desserts that hold up well outdoors. The result is a celebration that feels fresh, pretty, and perfectly suited to the shore.

Fall-Themed Weddings
A fall wedding brings together so many lovely elements—rich color, cozy flavors, rustic elegance, and the beauty of the season all wrapped into one celebration. From warm-toned cakes and autumn florals to desserts flavored with apple, spice, caramel, and pecan, fall-themed weddings feel welcoming, romantic, and full of personality.
This nod to one of my favorite seasons offers the perfect transition to The Tender Trap, Bella Novella Book 5, where Bella Neeley finds herself helping with an autumn ceremony built around a literary theme—proof that a seasonal wedding can be every bit as charming as it is unforgettable.

Savory Food Ideas
- sweet potato casserole

When it comes to fall wedding cakes, the sky's the limit! Just use autumn colors in your florals and any white cake can have a fall theme. (You'll notice one of these cakes repeated from above. I wanted to show how adaptable these cakes are, from season to season.)

If you're looking for fall cupcakes, I've got plenty. I'm especially fond of my Gingerbread Latte cupcakes (and they're pretty, too)!

Now let's talk fall cookies. The ones you see in the pictures below were my favorite wedding cookies. . .ever! I just loved adding the fall-colored flowers to the white background.

Think candlelight, evergreens, berries, soft metallics, snowy white cakes, and cozy desserts that make guests feel warmly welcomed. Whether the style is elegant and formal or rustic and festive, winter weddings offer plenty of beauty and seasonal charm.
I can't mention winter weddings without bringing up one of my all-time favorite romance novels, Picture Perfect, which is set at Christmas-time on Galveston Island. Unique Wedding Themes
Not every wedding fits neatly into one style category—and that’s part of the fun. Some couples want a cake that feels playful, unexpected, artistic, or deeply personal. These one-of-a-kind events break the mold and prove that sometimes the most memorable desserts are the ones that do something a little different.

These fun and colorful cupcakes would be great at a wedding, don't you think?

Here are some of my favorite "unique" wedding cookies over the years.

Dessert-Focused Wedding Receptions
Some couples choose to skip a full dinner and instead offer an incredible dessert buffet.

Dessert table ideas might include:
• cupcakes
• cake pops
• cookies
• brownies
• truffles
• mini cheesecakes
• chocolate fountains
A well-designed dessert table offers variety while creating a gorgeous focal point for the reception.
Tips for Designing a Themed Wedding Menu
When planning themed wedding foods, keep these tips in mind:
• Choose foods that match the atmosphere of the wedding
• Offer a mix of familiar favorites and unique treats
• Consider display and presentation
• Include items that are easy for guests to enjoy while mingling
Most importantly, the food should reflect the couple’s personality and story.
Final Thoughts
Themed wedding foods transform a reception into an experience.
Whether couples choose rustic comfort foods, international flavors, elegant desserts, or Southern classics, thoughtful menu planning helps create a celebration guests will remember for years.
With a little creativity, the wedding menu can become just as meaningful—and just as beautiful—as the décor itself.
