If you love a simple applesauce cake, this one is perfect. You’re going to love this one in the fall. It’s got those warm autumn flavors you’ve grown to love.
I’m rarely one to take a Pinterest recipe and make if verbatim, but I pinned a photo for an apple spice cake from The First Year blog that looked delicious. I added it to my “to be baked” list.
But you guys know me. I can’t leave well enough alone. I wasn’t in the mood to scoop up cupcakes. I know. Lazy. But I’m on a book deadline and I wanted something super fast and easy. So, I changed up the spices a little and baked it as a cake in a bundt pan.
I’m happy to finally have an applesauce cake recipe. I’ve been wanting to try one of these for ages!
So, what’s keeping us? Let’s get going!
Applesauce Cake Ingredients
You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s a quick look at what you’ll need. These are really simple ingredients you probably have on hand.
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice (or pumpkin pie spice)
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (if you use unsalted butter)
- 1 stick (1/2 cup) room temperature butter (salted or unsalted, your choice)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups applesauce (plain or cinnamon, sweet or unsweetened)
Frosting
- 2 cups prepared buttercream
- 1/2 cup caramel
How to Make Applesauce Cake
This comes together so easily, y’all! You’re going to love the process almost as much as you enjoy eating the cake! (I promise!)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Spray a bundt pan with Baker’s Joy (or grease and flour pan)
Place flour, soda, baking powder, cinnamon, apple pie spice, cloves, and salt in a small bowl and whisk together. Set aside.
În a medium bowl place room temperature butter and brown sugar. Mix well. I mixed mine by hand because I was trying to relieve some book deadline stress. Feel free to use a hand mixer or even a stand mixer with paddle attachment.
Add eggs and continue to mix.
Add applesauce. Batter mighty look a little curdled, but don’t worry.
Stir in the dry ingredients. Mix well.
Scoop into the prepared pan. Spread evenly.
Place on center rack in preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown. A toothpick should come out clean.
Remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool.
After about 15 minutes turn out directly onto rack.
Make your glaze. I happened to have a couple cups of my homemade buttercream, which I mixed into some homemade caramel (made from sweetened condensed milk). You can make your own caramel buttercream by mixing two sticks of butter with two cups of powdered sugar, then adding a dash of cream and however much caramel sauce you like. If you don’t want to bother with all of that, you can just drizzle the cake with plain caramel.
Place glaze in a piping bag and add to cake.
Serve and enjoy!
Store in refrigerator in airtight container up to three days.
What to Expect from this Cake
It’s filled with warm, rich spices and has a lovely texture! I love the flavor of the apples, which comes shining through. I’m also a huge fan of that luscious cinnamon flavor. All in all, this is a terrific cake!
