If you love warm, buttery French toast but you’re also a fan of a PB&J sandwich, you’re going to flip over this simple but delicious recipe!
Stuffed French Toast? What’s That?
Just as it sounds, “stuffed” French toast takes two pieces of bread and “stuffs” them with something in the middle. In the middle of this particular toast, two fan favorites: peanut butter and jelly.
I don’t know if you’ve ever had warm PB&J, but y’all. . .
It’s remarkable. The jelly (or preserves, your choice) are so stinking delicious warmed up. They give up a berry pie vibe. And that crisp buttery crust on the outside of the toast just sends it over the top.
More on the flavor of this French toast a little later, but let’s take a Quick Look at what you’ll need to make this delicious meal.
PB&J Stuffed French Toast Ingredients
This recipe makes 2 – 3 sandwiches, depending on the size of your bread slices.
- 4 pieces white bread (or bread of your choice)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons butter (salted or unsalted, your choice)
- 3-4 tablespoons peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons preserves or jelly (any flavor)
- Powdered sugar (to sprinkle)
How to Make Stuff French Toast with PB&J
This comes together so easily, friends! You’re going to have such a good time making it.
Start by building your PB&J sandwiches.
Place peanut butter on all four slices of bread.
Add preserves.
Sandwich together.
Place butter in skillet and turn on medium heat.
In a medium bowl whisk together eggs and milk until smooth and creamy.
Dip the sandwiches in the egg mixture. Make sure it’s coated well on both sides (and the edges).
Place sandwiches in sizzling butter. (Make sure it’s not too hot.)
Cook over medium heat until the French toast begins to turn golden brown.
Flip and cook on the other side.
Once the sandwiches are done, remove and place on paper towels to drain excess butter.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Cut in half and enjoy while warm.
Store leftovers wrapped in paper towels and refrigerated. You can reheat in a toaster oven or skillet. I don’t recommend freezing this dish.
What to Expect from This French Toast
Y’all, this is beyond delicious. Is it the warm buttery edges? Is it the oozing peanut butter, merged with hot fruit in the center? Is it the bread, lush and delicious? Yes, to all of the above. I can’t remember the last time I ever came up with a dish that I enjoy so much. And, if I’m being honest, I particularly enjoyed it because it was so easy to make! I love simple dishes. And this one hits all the notes for me, so I plan to make this again and again!
Variations on this Recipe
There are so many ways to mix this up. Here are a few things that come to mind:
Blackberry or Blueberry Jam: I used strawberry but you could really use any flavor you like. I am crazy about blackberry so I’ll try that next time.
Nutella: I think stuffing French toast with Nutella would be amazing. In fact, I might actually make that next time. Fill the middle with Nutella and sprinkle with powdered sugar, then drizzle more Nutella on top. (Yum!)
S’Mores: Fill the middle with a chocolate bar and marshmallow fluff for a s’mores flavor. You could even crush a graham cracker into the egg mixture for more texture and flavor.
