👉 You do NOT have to follow every international recipe exactly as written.

In fact, some of my best results have come from adapting recipes to fit what I already have on hand. If an ingredient is hard to find, I look for a simple substitute. If a technique feels too complicated, I find a way to simplify it.

This might mean:

  • Using a familiar spice instead of a specialty one
  • Skipping a multi-step process in favor of something quicker
  • Adjusting sweetness or texture to suit your taste

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s enjoyment.

I did it with my Tiramisu. I did it with my Black Forest cake, (which I morphed into a bundt cake). I I did it with my Baklava bites. (I've still never worked with phyllo dough!)

I often make tweaks to simply the process, and you can, too. There's no shame in it, I promise.

📦 Using Boxed Mixes for International Desserts

Speaking of easing the guilt burden: This is where things get really fun—and where my “out of the box” philosophy really comes into play.

You can absolutely use a boxed mix as a starting point for international-inspired desserts. In fact, it’s one of my favorite ways to make these recipes more accessible.

For example, you can use a simple white cake mix as the base for a Tres Leches Cake, or dress up a basic mix with spices and extracts to mimic the flavors of European or Middle Eastern desserts.

These shortcuts don’t take away from the experience—they make it possible.
