Discover international baking made simple! Explore global desserts by region, learn how to adapt recipes, and find easy, approachable versions of worldwide favorites

If you’ve ever wanted to bake desserts from around the world but felt a little unsure where to begin, you’re definitely not alone. Over the years, I’ve found that many home bakers are curious about international recipes—but they’re also a bit intimidated by unfamiliar ingredients, techniques, or long, complicated instructions.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way.
Here at Out of the Box Baking, I’ve spent years experimenting with recipes from different cultures and finding ways to make them more approachable for everyday bakers. Whether that means simplifying a technique, swapping ingredients, or even starting with a boxed mix, my goal is always the same: to help you create something delicious without stress.
Because at the end of the day, baking should feel fun—not overwhelming.
🌍 What Makes International Baking So Special?

One of the things I love most about baking around the world is how each region brings its own personality to the table. European desserts tend to be rich and structured, often featuring butter-forward flavors and delicate textures. In contrast, many Latin American and Caribbean desserts are incredibly moist and sweet, often infused with milk, coconut, or tropical fruits.
Middle Eastern treats lean into warm spices, honey, and nuts, creating deeply layered flavors that feel both comforting and luxurious. And of course, American baking—something most of us grew up with—focuses on nostalgic, crowd-pleasing favorites like cobblers, brownies, and yummy cakes. (Hey, what can I say? We love our sweets! They make us feel cozy, inside and out.)
It's Easy to Go Global. . .I Promise!
Once you begin to recognize these patterns, international baking starts to feel a lot less intimidating—and a lot more exciting. And I've got tips and hacks to make things even simpler.
Intrigued? I know I am! So grab a flaky French pastry, pour yourself a strong Italian espresso, and let’s get baking!
Note: You're about to discover sweet treats, breads, appetizers, and more!
🧁 European Baking Favorites

European baking is often where people begin their global baking journey, and for good reason. These recipes are classic, elegant, and deeply rooted in tradition—but they’re also surprisingly adaptable.
If you love buttery cookies and simple, comforting treats, you might enjoy recipes like my Scottish Shortbread or French Butter Cookies, both of which are perfect alongside a cup of tea. For something a little more rustic, my Irish Soda Bread is a wonderful starting point and doesn’t require any yeast at all. I'm also a huge fan of my Flaky Crescent Rolls. Yum.
And if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you can even try working with puff pastry in recipes like Palmiers, which offer that light, flaky texture without requiring you to make the dough from scratch.
If you’re ready to explore even more European-inspired baking, here are some reader favorites from my kitchen:

If you’re drawn to bold, sweet flavors, this category is going to be right up your alley. These desserts are known for their richness and moisture, often incorporating milk-based sauces or tropical ingredients.
A great place to start is with Tres Leches Cake, which is soaked in a sweet milk mixture and incredibly tender. You might also love my Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, which brings in that bright, fruity flavor that’s so common in tropical baking.
These recipes are perfect for gatherings because they’re both eye-catching and crowd-pleasing.

🌍 Middle Eastern & Mediterranean Treats

This is one of the most flavorful areas of international baking, filled with desserts that feature honey, nuts, and warm spices. The textures are often layered and delicate, but the flavors are bold and memorable.
If you’ve ever worked with puff pastry or phyllo dough, you’ll feel right at home here. Even simple recipes in this category can feel incredibly special, thanks to the combination of ingredients and the way they’re assembled.
And the best part? Many of these flavors can be recreated with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
Some of my favorite Mediterranean bakes include:
🇺🇸 American Comfort Classics

Of course, we can’t talk about baking without acknowledging the classics many of us grew up with. American desserts may not always feel “international,” but they absolutely belong in the global conversation.
Recipes like Cobbler, Brownies, and Old-Fashioned Cakes reflect a style of baking that’s all about comfort and simplicity. These are the recipes we turn to again and again—not just because they’re easy, but because they feel like home.

🔄 How to Adapt International Recipes for Everyday Baking
Here’s something I want you to hear loud and clear, my fellow bakers:
👉 You do NOT have to follow every international recipe exactly as written.
In fact, some of my best results have come from adapting recipes to fit what I already have on hand. If an ingredient is hard to find, I look for a simple substitute. If a technique feels too complicated, I find a way to simplify it.

This might mean:
- Using a familiar spice instead of a specialty one
- Skipping a multi-step process in favor of something quicker
- Adjusting sweetness or texture to suit your taste
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s enjoyment.
I did it with my Tiramisu. I did it with my Black Forest cake, (which I morphed into a bundt cake). I I did it with my Baklava bites. (I've still never worked with phyllo dough!)
I often make tweaks to simply the process, and you can, too. There's no shame in it, I promise.
📦 Using Boxed Mixes for International Desserts
Speaking of easing the guilt burden: This is where things get really fun—and where my “out of the box” philosophy really comes into play.

You can absolutely use a boxed mix as a starting point for international-inspired desserts. In fact, it’s one of my favorite ways to make these recipes more accessible.
For example, you can use a simple white cake mix as the base for a Tres Leches Cake, or dress up a basic mix with spices and extracts to mimic the flavors of European or Middle Eastern desserts.
These shortcuts don’t take away from the experience—they make it possible.
Here are some of my favorite international twists using a cake mix:
- Mexican Hot Chocolate Bundt Cake
- Cake Mix Kolaches
- 3-Ingredient Pineapple Cupcakes
- Lime in the Coconut Cupcakes
- Delicious Lemon Coconut Bars
🌎 Where to Start
If you’re new to baking international desserts, I recommend starting with recipes that feel familiar but offer a slight twist. A simple cookie, a fruit-based cake, or a quick bread from another country can be a great introduction.
Once you build confidence, you can branch out into more complex recipes—but there’s no rush. This is a journey, not a race.
