Sloppy Joe Roll Ups

If you’re looking for a simple and delicious appetizer, one you can take to your next event, one with flavors reminiscent of your childhood, this is the post for you! These yummy Sloppy Joe Roll Ups are going to make everyone happy!

What Are Sloppy Joes?

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food, featuring ground beef (or sometimes other meats) cooked in a tangy, slightly sweet tomato-based sauce and served on a soft hamburger bun. The dish gets its name from its messy, "sloppy" nature, as the saucy mixture tends to spill out of the bun with every bite.

When I was a kid my mama made our Sloppy Joes from scratch, (meaning she didn’t use Manwich. She concocted her own pantry staples (ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar) and made this quick and budget-friendly meal, which we all loved!

What Is Manwich?

These days most folks use a can of Manwich.Manwich is a pre-packaged sloppy joe sauce introduced by Hunt’s in 1969. I didn’t discover it until I was a mom, myself. Unlike my own mother I wasn’t very creative in the kitchen. So, I used the canned version.

Manwich (a blend of tomatoes, spices and seasoning in a convenient canned sauce) makes sloppy joes quick and easy,

I decided Manwich was just the ticket for this simple and delicious appetizer, which turned out so great even Mama would’ve been happy with the outcome!

Dampen the edges of the dough with a bit of water. (I brush mine on with a pastry brush.)
Fold over the dough and press down with fingertips. Use the tines of a fork to crimp the edges of the dough. (This is important so the sauce doesn’t leak out.)

Repeat this process on all three rectangles.

Now unroll the second puff pastry and repeat this whole process.
Use a pizza cutter to cut each rectangle into five pieces.

Press down hard with the pizza cutter to seal the edges or you’ll lose some of the sauce as they bake.
Separate out to give pieces on the parchment lined baking sheet to grow as they bake.

They’re crisp on the outside, packed with spice on the inside, and will immediately make you feel like you’ve reeled backward in time to your childhood. I’ll be honest: they’re a little messy when they come out of the oven but I used a spoon to clean them up as they cooled. (I nudged the escaping sauce and cheese back in place.) All in all, I’d have to say this one is a real winner, one that people of all ages will love!
