If you love the refreshing flavor of mint and enjoy rich chocolate, then I have a great recipe for you! These Copycat York Peppermint Patties are exactly like the ones you buy in the checkout line. . .but at a fraction of the cost!
Can I Make my Own York Peppermint Patty?
Peppermint lovers, unite! Have I got a treat for you, a homemade version of a candy you already love. This is one of those copycat recipes you’re going to love!
I was surprised to learn that copycat peppermint patties were so easy! The day I made these, I had been on my feet all day, baking cinnamon rolls and yeast rolls.
You know how it is when you’ve had a long day and you should put your feet up? Well, I moseyed over to the sofa, took a seat, and pulled up some baking videos on my phone.
That’s when I stumbled across a video featuring these easy copycat peppermint patties.
I took one look at the simple recipe and thought, “I could do that!”
In fact, it looked like I could whip them up in minutes.
So, I climbed off of the sofa, moseyed back into my (messy) kitchen, and made these delicious candies.
I’ll be sharing more about how they turned out in a bit, but let’s start with the ingredients.
Peppermint Pattie Ingredients
You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need to make these amazing treats. These are simple ingredients you probably have on hand in your pantry or fridge.
- sweetened condensed milk
- powdered sugar
- peppermint extract (or peppermint oil)
- melting chocolate (chocolate almond bark or dark chocolate chips)
- vegetable oil
- sprinkles (optional)
How to Make Copycat Peppermint Patties
These came together so easily! I only wish I’d discovered the recipe for this homemade version of peppermint patties sooner!
Start by combining your sweetened condensed milk, peppermint extract, and powdered sugar in your stand mixer with bread hook. You’ll want to knead it at low speed for at least 2 – 3 minutes so that it fully comes together.
Roll thin with your rolling pin (about 1/4 – 1/3 of an inch.
Use a 2 1/2 – 3″ circle cookie cutter to cut out circles of the dough.
Prepare cookie sheets with wax paper or sheets of parchment paper. Place circles of dough on the cookie sheets.
Place in freezer for 10 – 15 minutes to firm up. If you prefer, you could put them into the fridge for an hour. You need the circles to be completely firm to dip in chocolate.
Once circles are ready to go, it’s times to melt your chocolate. Place almond bark (or chocolate chips) in a microwave safe bowl and add a tablespoon of vegetable oil or coconut oil.
Microwave in 30-second intervals until chocolate is melted. Mine took two minutes. If you prefer, you can use a double boiler, but the microwave is faster and easier.
Stir until completely smooth.
It’s time to cover your peppermint patties.
Place one circle of dough at a time on a large serving fork and dip in melted chocolate. You can use a spoon to spoon the liquid chocolate over the circle. You can throw on a few sprinkles while the chocolate’s still wet if you like.
Place on baking sheet and put back in the fridge or freezer to firm up for a few minutes.
Lift from wax paper and smooth out bottom edges. (I used a paring knife to chip away the excess chocolate. Then I smoothed down the edges with the warmth of my fingers.)
Store single layered in an airtight container in the refrigerator. These will stay fresh for several days. They are best cold.
If you want to freeze them, you can. They should stay fresh up to two months in a freezer bag or other airtight container. I put mine in individual snack baggies to give away as gifts.
What to Expect from these Copycat Peppermint Patties
This is one of those copycat recipes you’re going to love. And these delicious candies are just as good as the ones you can buy in your local grocery stores.
First of all. . .yum! They’re delicious, especially ice cold. That peppermint filling is everything! And that rich dark chocolate coating? Yum!
I have to tell the truth: These are identical to the peppermint patties you get in the store. Same texture, same taste. . .same everything.
But they’re a lot less pricey. I estimated that I spent about $7 in ingredients to make 36 of them. To purchase one in the checkout lane at my local grocery story is more than a dollar!
Talk about a great choice! I’ll be making my own from now on.
To make this story even better, my grandkids loved them. In fact, one of my granddaughters attends a school called “York” and she took a dozen of these peppermint patties to her teachers to celebrate that fact. (They loved them!)
These would be great during the holiday season but don’t wait until then to make them. They’re great, year ’round!
