Recipes that Use Pie Filling

If you've got some extra pie filling in your pantry and you're looking for a way to use it up, this is the post for you! I'm going to share some of my favorite pie filling recipes you're going to love!

If you’ve ever found a can of pie filling in your pantry and wondered what to do with it, you’re in for a treat!

As a lifelong baker and recipe developer behind Out of the Box Baking, I’ve tested dozens of creative ways to turn simple pie fillings into mouth-watering desserts. From quick dump cakes to hand pies, cobblers, and bars, these recipes are tried, true, and delightfully easy—no rolling pin required!

Whether you’re baking for a church supper, a family dinner, or a last-minute gathering, these ideas prove that a can of pie filling can become something truly special in no time at all.

Why Use Pie Filling?

Pie filling makes everything easier! You can use it in pies (duh), cakes, cupcakes, cobblers, and so many more luscious desserts!

Here are a few of the "types" of canned pie fillings you can try:

  1. Fruit Fillings: These are the most popular, and for good reason! They're made from fresh, canned, or frozen fruits combined with sugar, spices, and sometimes thickeners like cornstarch or tapioca. Most of my recipes are made with fruity pie fillings. Examples include:
    • Apple pie filling: Made with sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and sometimes lemon juice. (Boy, do I have a lot of recipes that include apple pie filling!)
    • Cherry pie filling: Made with cherries, sugar, and a thickening agent. I bake with cherry pie filling a lot, which you will see!
    • Blueberry pie filling: Made with blueberries, sugar, and often lemon juice and a thickener. This is a delicious option.
    • Blackberry pie filling: This is a personal favorite!
    • Strawberry pie filling: Y'all, you are going to want to try this one! You can do so much with a simple can of strawberry pie filling!
    • Peach pie filling: Peach pie, anyone? Peach cobbler? You'll love all of the options!
  2. Custard Fillings: These are smooth, creamy fillings made from eggs, milk or cream, sugar, and flavorings. Some examples of custard pie fillings would include:
    • Pumpkin pie filling: This one is made with pureed pumpkin, eggs, condensed milk, and spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. This is a go-to for pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, and so on.
    • Lemon meringue pie filling: Made with lemon juice, sugar, eggs, and cornstarch, topped with meringue. I've used this in a variety of recipes.

There are so many ready-to-go options!
