If you’re looking for a gooey, rich brownie to share with your loved one this Valentine’s Day, one that screams, “Be Mine!” you’ll find that in this fun recipe! This doctored cake mix brownie is the perfect way to say “I love you!”

Valentine Treats Are Delicious!
I should know! I’ve made lots and lots of them. If you’ve been following me for a while you know I’ve got Valentine cookies, cakes, candies, and so much more!
But, until tonight, I didn’t have any brownie recipes specific to Valentine’s Day. So, I decided to remedy that with this doctored cake mix recipe.
I decided right away that this recipe needed something colorful on top. I happened to have a can of strawberry pie filling. Delicious, right?
Is it a dump cake or a brownie?
I went back and forth in my mind before I labeled this recipe a brownie. A dump cake is usually made the other way around, with the pie filling on bottom and the cake mix above it with slices of button on top. This is pretty much the opposite of that.
In some ways, it’s a bit like my earthquake cake (and certain rose in an illogical way) but I think you’ll love these brownies, no matter their shape! Just promise you’ll be patient when it comes time to cool them. They must be 100% cool before they’re cut.
Gooey Cake Ingredients

You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s what you’ll need to make these brownies:
- 1 box devil’s food cake (15.25 ounce)
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup melted butter
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 cup mini chocolate chips
- 1 can strawberry pie filling (chopped up)
- Valentine Candy (truffles or chocolate hearts, your choice)
How to Make Be My Valentine Brownies
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with baking spray.
Open pie filling and use a knife to chop up the berries.

Place butter in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for one minute or until mostly melted.

Once butter cools, add cake mix (or brownie mix), eggs, and milk. Stir well.
Add chocolate chips.

Mix well.

Spread into prepared pan. Smooth out.
Spoon pie filling on top. Spread evenly.

Place in preheated oven. Bake for 55-60 minutes or until set.

Remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool. This is one brownie recipe that you want to cool completely.
Once brownies are completely cooled, cut into squares and decorate with Valentine’s candy.

Serve and enjoy!

Store in airtight container in refrigerator. They should stay good for 5-6 days in the refrigerator.
You can freeze these to serve later. They should stay good up to two months in the freezer.
What to Expect from this Valentine Brownies Recipe

I confessed in another recent post (my doctored brownie mix post) that I’m pretty much a brownie failure. I haven’t been able to figure out the best homemade or doctored cake mix brownies because mine always come out uncooked in the middle. I think I finally figured out that I’ve been using a baking dish that’s too small, which is why I went with a 9x13 for this recipe.
I will confess that this took a lot longer to cook than my other brownies, so I wasn’t feeling very confident at the 40 minute mark. But I was so delighted to see that they baked up just fine with extra time. And I knew I would love that strawberry topping. It did not disappoint!
These brownies are gooey, rich, sweet, and have that added twist of chocolate inside, as well as the strawberry filling on top, which firms up as it bakes, giving it a shimmer and shine. It’s a great vehicle for the candy.
That’s it for this post, friends! I hope you enjoyed this delicious recipe.
