Delicious Mint Oreo Trifle

Mint Oreo Trifle

If you love creamy layers of chocolate fudge brownies, mint chocolate mousse and whipped cream, along with bits of minty Oreos, you’ve come to the right place! Today’s post will delve into one of my favorite recipes, a delicious Mint Oreo Trifle.

Ask any of my grandchildren about their favorite sweet treat and they’re sure to say, “Those yummy chocolate mints we get at Olive Garden.”

And, they would be right. There’s something about mint chocolate that hits the spot after a tasty meal. It makes the yummiest dessert ever, and it doesn’t take much to satisfy you and leave you feeling like you’ve been pampered.

Don’t believe it? Check out my Double Mint Chocolate Cookie Recipe. I’ve got a lot of chocolate offerings on my site that pair beautifully with mint, like my Easy Brownies or my Stuffed Brownie Cookies.

Let’s Celebrate Chocolate and Mint!

This flavor combination is so revered that it even has its own holiday. Yep, you read that right. National Chocolate Mint Day is celebrated on February 19th. Woo-hoo! Party, anyone? I’ll bring the kazoos and balloons!

The merging of chocolate and mint started with the Aztecs and Mayans eons ago. From there, the idea traveled to Europe, and then bounced around through time in various forms and fashions. It really took off in the 1940s with the birth of the York Peppermint Pattie, (which makes an appearance in today’s recipe in the form of a mousse).

Yes, chocolate and mint are all the rage.

Not everyone would agree, of course. There are a few misguided people out there who believe that mint and chocolate make awkward bedfellows. Some of them would say, “Um, no thanks. Toothpaste and chocolate in the same dessert? I don’t think so.”

Oh, but then they take a little nibble of a cool, delicious mint chocolate trifle. . .and they’re converted. They’re like sinners in the front pew on a Sunday morning, feeling the heat. Er, feeling the cold. Because mint is, after all, cool and inviting.

And that, my friends, is what makes it such a spectacular foundation for today’s dessert. After a warm or spicy meal your tongue is begging for something refreshing, something that says, “Change gears, fellas! We’re winding down over here.”

Oreo Brownie Trifle Recipe? Yes, Please!

If you’re like my grandkids and love, love, love mint chocolate, you’re going to flip over this Oreo Brownie Trifle recipe. It combines all that is good and right in the world—the luxury of chocolate and the zip and zing of peppermint—merging it all into one fluffy bowlful of deliciousness. It’s layer upon layer of tastes, textures, and scents guaranteed to leave your family or party guests clamoring for more.

It’s especially good during the holidays. Serve this dish as a Christmas dessert and your guests will swoon!

What are you waiting for, friends? Let’s whip up some of this minty magic!

Mint Oreo Cookie Trifle Ingredients

This recipe has many components but each one is pretty simple. We’ll start with the brownies, which form the base of this delicious trifle.

I’ve included a printable recipe card with the ingredients and detailed instructions at the bottom of this post for your convenience.

Ingredients for Mint Oreo brownies: mint chips, chocolate fudge brownie recipe, oil, water, eggs.
Mint Oreo Trifle Ingredients

Brownie Ingredients

  • 1 brownie mix
  • 1 cup mint chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup oil
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 eggs

Mint Cheesecake Mousse Ingredients

These are basic ingredients, but trust me when I say they don’t taste basic when you combine them all! I’m pretty sure the Girl Scouts would be tickled to serve this (substitution thin mints for the Oreos). Those are the flavors you’re about to enjoy with this trifle dessert!

You will find a full list of ingredients in the printable recipe at the bottom of this post. For now, here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need to make this delicious Oreo Trifle.

  • 1 rectangle softened cream cheese
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 box York Peppermint Pudding Mix
  • 1 cup cold milk

Note: You can substitute Cool Whip but it’s not as stable.

Additional Note: You can use a chocolate cake mix in place of brownies if you like, but firm them up (meaning, cut back a little on the milk or water so that they are firmer in consistency, like a brownie).

Whipped Cream Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup powdered sugar

Other Ingredients

  • Package of Oreo Mint Cookies (1 sleeve chopped, 2 sleeves for decoration)
  • Chocolate syrup

How to Make Mint Oreo Trifle

Brownies:

Bake brownies according to instructions on box. There’s no need to use an electric mixer. Brownie mixes come together easily and can be mixed by hand.

Combine all ingredients, adding mint chocolate chips. Place in greased 9×13 pan and bake at 350 for 28 minutes or until done. Cool on wire rack and break into pieces, approximately 1” in size. (You’re going to be tempted to eat the mint brownies. . .but don’t!)

Mint Cheesecake Mousse:

Whip cream cheese until soft. Slowly incorporate whipping cream and beat until combined with cream cheese. Add powdered sugar and York peppermint pudding mix. Continue to mix until it comes to a mousse consistency. It will thicken to a paste-like consistency, so you’ll need to thin it down with the milk. Work in as much (or as little) milk as you please, mixing the whole time.

Whipped Cream:

Combine cream and powdered sugar. Beat at high speed with whisk attachment until soft peaks form. (I’m always tempted to stick my finger in the bowl of whipped topping!)

It’s time to put it all together!

Look at all of that deliciousness!

Choose a clear glass or plastic bowl (preferably a trifle bowl) to show off the various layers. You’ll want a large bowl or two medium-large ones. (This is a big recipe.)

Add half of the brownie pieces to bottom of container then press in some Oreos around the outer edges of the bottom of the bowl. (Notice I waited to add them until after the brownies. They need the support of the brownies to stand up!)

Now comes the good stuff!

Layer the ingredients in this order:

  • Brownies
  • Mousse (half of what you made)
  • Oreos (1/3 of the ones you crushed)
  • chocolate syrup (drizzle on as much or as little as you like)
  • Whipped cream (half of what you made)
  • Repeat

Check out those layers, y’all!

When you reach the top layer of the heavy cream mixture, sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos on and use the final sleeve of whole Oreos to decorate to your heart’s content.

What to Expect from this Luscious Trifle

Grab a Spoon, Y’all!

Yes, sweet friends, grab the biggest spoon you can find. Or two. Or twelve. You’ll want to share this super-licious dessert with everyone you know! It’s rich, it’s decadent. The pudding mixture is creamy. Then you’ve got the crunchy Oreo cookies. It’s. . .everything. . .all in one bowl. It’s truly the perfect dessert.

And boy, is it a feast for the eyes!

Check out this Oreo Trifle in my pretty trifle bowl, y’all! I think this would make the perfect St. Patrick’s Day dessert. Add a couple drops food coloring to turn that whipped cream a lovely shade of Kelly green. But it’s so cool and delicious that you could serve it on a hot summer day and wow your guests!
