If you’re looking for a simple and quick treat for your dogs, this is the post for you! I’m going to show you how I make easy, delicious sweet potato treats!
Homemade Dog Treats are Best
I love making homemade dog treats for my dogs, in part because I have a lot of them! (Dogs, not treats.) I happen to have four of my own and (currently) three fosters. I always have a houseful.
Trust me when I say that store bought dog treats are pricey when you’ve got so many mouths to feed.
So, I like to make my own as often as I can. I made some banana-infused treats awhile back. Oh, and my peanut butter dog treats are perfect. But today I happened to have a huge can of sweet potatoes and decided to make a new-to-me version.
Let’s talk about how I did it and then I’ll share the outcome.
Sweet Potato Dog Treats Ingredients
- 1 large can (40 oz) sweet potatoes, drained.
- 3 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups ground oats
- 1 1/2 cups wheat flour (plus 1/2 cup more for rolling)
How to Make Sweet Potato Dog Treats
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sprinkle a piece of parchment paper with a couple tablespoons of the excess wheat flour.
Make the Dough
Drain sweet potatoes and place them in a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix well.
Add eggs and beat until creamy.
Add oats and mix well. Add flour and beat until it all comes together.
This next step will vary, depending on the depth of the treats you want to make. I was going for thicker/larger treats, so I used one cookie sheet. Feel free to divide this into two if you want thinner, crisper treats.
Place dough on floured parchment paper.
Generously sprinkle the top with the excess wheat flour.
Place a piece of waxed paper on top.
Roll with a large rolling pin until the parchment paper is mostly covered. (Don’t go over the edges.) Make sure it’s level.
Remove parchment paper and lift parchment paper onto a cookie sheet.
Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into squares or whatever size pieces you prefer.
Place in preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes or until set.
(Note: If you’re making two trays of thinner treat they will probably only need to bake about 15 minutes.)
Remove and allow to cool completely.
Break into pieces and allow to continue to dry and harden.
Serve and watch your pups enjoy!
Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
What to Expect from These Dog Treats
Your dogs are going to love these and you’ll love how simple they are to make. For under five dollars you can make a huge tray of treats that are healthy, yummy, and safer for your pups to enjoy. Your canines will thank you, I promise!
Variations on this Recipe
There are so many ways to mix this up, y’all! Here are a few thoughts:
Pumpkin: Don’t have sweet potatoes? No worries! Use pumpkin puree, instead.
Peanut Butter: If you don’t want to use sweet potatoes, substitute peanut butter in its place.
Applesauce: You can sweeten things up a bit by adding half applesauce and half sweet potatoes. You might have to adjust the flour a bit (adding more) to keep the dough stiff.
Oats: You don’t have to grind the oats. You can add them whole. (Delicious!)
That’s it for this post, friends! I hope you enjoyed this delicious recipe.
