If you’re interested in making your own dog treats, this is the post for you! This is a simple recipe that anyone can use. It’s one that your dogs are sure to love, and it’s so easy to make!
Dog Treats are Expensive
I don’t know about you but I spend a lot of money buying dog treats for my three dogs.
Crunchy treats. Chew sticks. You name it, I spend money on it. Between dog food and dog treats, my weekly food budget goes w-a-y up.
The other day I ran out of dog treats.
I know. Tragedy. Those of you who have pets know what a calamity this is. And we happened to be having a bad weather day, so I didn’t want to drive to the store.
What’s a person to do?
Make treats, of course!
I whipped up the simplest batch of dog treats. The whole project took me half an hour–start to finish. And the dogs loved the treats so much that I’ll be making them again and again.
Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?
This is a legitimate question. Turns out, they can, in small quantities. They can also have the other ingredients in this recipe (which you will find below).
Everything in moderation, as my grandma used to say.
So, let’s take a look at what you’ll need to make these easy-breezy peanut butter dog treats.
Peanut Butter Dog Treat Ingredients
You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need to make these easy dog treats. These are simple ingredients you probably have on hand.
- wheat flour
- oat flour (or ground oats)
- peanut butter
- eggs
- water
How to Make Simple Dog Treats from Scratch
These came together so easily! I can’t wait to make them again.
Start by processing your oats if you don’t have oat flour. I put mine in the food processor and ground them down to a gritty powder. I used my Thermomix but you can use whatever you happen to have.
Combine all ingredients except water in a large bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer).
Mix well until everything is incorporated. The mix will be dry.
It’s time to add the water, which will bring it all together.
Place dough on waxed paper (or other prepared surface) and roll to about 1/4 – 1/3 inch thickness. (Really, it’s your preference.)
I used the same guides I use for my cut-out sugar cookies so I could control the thickness and ensure each cookie was level.
I cut out mine using heart cutters. (I didn’t want overly-large treats.)
Place on parchment lined cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 15 minutes.
Remove from oven and place tray on wire rack to cool.
Make sure the treats are 100% cooled before attempting to store in an airtight container. You want them to stay crisp, not soften up.
These treats will only stay fresh for 4 – 5 days, but if your dogs love them as much as mine did, this won’t be a problem. You can always freeze them for later use if you like.
Variations on this Recipe
I have another recipe for dog treats that calls for Sweet Potatoes and almond flour. You can add either (or both) to this recipe. It’s your choice.
Pumpkin is another thing that dogs love. You can always add pumpkin to the mix. Just increase your dry ingredients to form a paste thick enough to roll.
That’s it for this post, friends! I hope you enjoyed this simple dog treat recipe. Your pups are sure to love it!
