Whip up the dreamiest cinnamon cream cheese frosting—perfectly spiced, silky smooth, and just the right balance of tang and sweetness. Ideal for cakes, cupcakes, and cinnamon rolls!

Cream Cheese Frosting with Cinnamon for the Win!
There’s something so unbelievably irresistible about cream cheese frosting—it’s tangy, rich, and pairs beautifully with just about any dessert.
I keep cream cheese in my fridge at all times. If I ever run out (unthinkable!) I make a mad dash to the store to buy more. (And I always buy the dual-pack, not the single, because one can never have too much cream cheese.)
I use cream cheese in my Dreamy Buttercream. Most of the people who eat my cakes don’t even realize it’s in there. They just always comment that my buttercream is beyond delicious.
Shh! It’s my little secret!
So, what happens if you take a lovely cream cheese frosting and add cinnamon to it?
Well, I found out first-hand a few days back when I made Gingerbread Whoopie Pies. The recipe called for a cinnamon cream cheese frosting stuffed between the layers. And y’all. . .
Well, let’s just say I decided that frosting was worthy of its own blog post. So, here we are, gathering around another block of cream cheese in celebration of a super delicious frosting!
What Makes Cinnamon Work in Cream Cheese Frosting?
Add a hint of warm cinnamon, and suddenly that frosting become cozy, nostalgic, and absolutely crave-worthy.
This cinnamon cream cheese frosting is the kind of recipe you’ll want to keep on repeat, whether you’re swirling it on top of cupcakes, placing it between cake layers, or spreading it generously over fresh cinnamon rolls.
We’ll talk about other uses for it later in the post but here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need to make it.
Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients

You will find a full recipe card at the bottom of this post. These are such simple ingredients. You might already have them in your pantry or fridge.
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3–4 cups powdered sugar (you can bump this up to 4–5 cups if you want a stiffer frosting for cakes)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
How to Make Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting
This comes together so easily, so beautifully, that you’ll wonder why you’ve never made it before!
In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth and fluffy. (I often start with just cream cheese in the bowl to make sure there are no lumps.)

Add the vanilla extract and cinnamon, mixing until combined. You want a really smooth mixture.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, starting with 3 cups, until you reach your desired sweetness and consistency.

For cupcakes or cinnamon rolls, a softer frosting is lovely. For cakes, add up to 5 cups powdered sugar so it holds up for layering and decorating. This is really a matter of personal preference.
It’s Time to Decorate!

Use this frosting as:
A filling in whoopie pies (like my Gingerbread Whoppie Pies).

Cinnamon Roll Frosting: This is just begging to be used on cinnamon rolls!
Spice Cake or Carrot Cake: This would be the ideal frosting for a spicy cake for fall.
Carrot Cake Cookies: I wish I’d discovered this frosting before I made these carrot cake cookies last year. It would have been perfect!
Classic Vanilla Cupcakes: This frosting would take my from scratch cupcakes over the top!
No matter how or where you use it, you’re going to love this yummy frosting!
