If you love the idea of a homemade cinnamon roll but you don’t want to take the time for homemade dough to rise, this viral tiktok cinnamon rolls recipe is the one for you!
Cinnamon Rolls Don’t Have to be Homemade
Let’s start with the obvious: Why would you make cinnamon rolls from scratch? Are they really that much better?
After all, store bought cinnamon rolls (the kind you bake in the oven) are pretty good, too. So, why start from scratch?
The truth is, you don’t have to. And with this viral TikTok hack, you really, really don’t have to. You can make a canned cinnamon roll taste homemade with a few easy tweaks.
No doubt you've seen this recipe all over social media. It has been making the rounds for a while now. I thought it was about time I made them for this blog, just in case you had missed them elsewhere.
Homemade Flavor in a Fraction of the Time
If we’re being honest, one of the main reasons people don’t make homemade cinnamon rolls is because of the time involved. When you’re in the mood for a cinnamon roll, you usually want it quickly.
I’ve got a great homemade cinnamon roll recipe but it takes a long time. But tonight I was in a hurry. I had a hankering for cinnamon rolls. I had the canned ones in the fridge but then I remembered this Tik-Tok version, so I decided to give it a try.
Adding these changes will take your canned cinnamon rolls to the next level, I promise! They really do taste home-made! And best of all, these are still the easiest cinnamon rolls!
This is one of those viral tiktok recipes you're going to be able to use again and again.
Ingredients
You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s a peek at what you’ll need. These are simple ingredients you might already have in your pantry or refrigerator.
- canned cinnamon rolls, any brand
- heavy cream
- brown sugar
- cinnamon (not pictured)
- chopped pecans
- butter, melted
How to Make these Almost-Homemade Cinnamon Rolls
Butter a 9x13-inch pan. (I make a half-batch, which is why my pan is smaller. If you make the full recipe then follow the recipe exactly.)
Pour ¾ cup of the cream into the bottom of the pan.
Place the cinnamon rolls into the baking dish in a single layer. Set the cream cheese frosting aside.
If you haven’t already done so, melt the butter. I did mine in the microwave in a small bowl.
Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, and remaining cream to the melted butter.
Place back in the microwave and heat in 30-second increments until you can stir it smooth. (Mine only took about a minute.)
Spoon the brown sugar mixture over the unbaked rolls.
Add chopped pecans.
Place in oven and bake. Some of the online recipes say to bake for 13 - 17 minutes but mine took quite a bit longer (about 20 minutes).
They might not turn as golden brown as usual, but that’s okay. Just make sure the middles are cooked.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool. There are a couple of reasons for this: since this recipe calls for so much heavy cream, it will need time to cool down, to thicken, and to caramelize with those brown sugar and butter flavors. (You don’t want to skip this step.)
Once they are ready to serve, drizzle the cream cheese icing on top of the cinnamon rolls.
Serve and enjoy these delicious cinnamon rolls. Talk about a fun viral hack!
Leftover cinnamon rolls can be kept at room temperature, tightly covered in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Or, you can store them in an airtight container. They should stay good up to three days.
What to Expect from this Recipe
These cinnamon rolls are gooey and delicious. They’re loaded with moisture and flavor. They’re also sticky sweet, which is always fun in a cinnamon roll. The best part is that caramel-pecan topping. Yum!
Next time I might use a little less cream, since I was left with some liquid in the bottom of the pan. But that didn't seem to affect the cinnamon rolls. Thy were incredibly luscious and that sweet cream turned them into gooey cinnamon rolls.
Here's the crazy thing: They were moist, but they were still fluffy cinnamon rolls. Talk about a delicious treat! (And what an easy way to make simple canned rolls taste decadent and homemade!)
I totally meant to add more cinnamon to the brown sugar mixture, but you can always do that. I’d suggest at least a teaspoon. Speaking of variations, let’s talk about a few.
Variations on this Recipe
It’s time to mix things up. Let’s talk some ways you can do that.
Pumpkin spice cinnamon rolls: Want to add a fun fall twist to this recipe? Add some pumpkin pie spice to your brown sugar mixture.
Hot fudge: Instead of drizzling with the cream cheese icing, you can always warm up some store-bought hot fudge and drizzle it over, instead.
Chocolate Chips: You can sprinkle with chocolate chips before baking, if you like. Leave the pecans. . .or don't. Your choice!
Raisins: Not everyone loves raisins on their cinnamon rolls but I think they’re great! If you like, sprinkle a few on or press them in-between the layers of the rolls before baking.
