The Ultimate Christmas Breakfast Bakes

Looking for something special to bake for your friends and family on Christmas morning? You've come to the right place! In this fun post my food blogging buddies share 75 of their favorite breakfast treats, perfect for the holidays!

Christmas Mornings are the Best!

There's something so magical about Christmas morning! You can sense the anticipation in the air. Children's giggles and squeals sound across the house, waking the old folks and stirring everyone to action.

"It's Christmas! Time to open those gifts!"

Somewhere along the way, though. . .they've got to eat.

Now, I don't know about you, but I'm not a morning person. Not even close. Every time I'm asked to provide foods for an early morning event I get overwhelmed right away. The idea of getting up early and baking doesn't hold a lot of appeal.

That said, there are a few days a year that I don't mind it. When family and friends are gathered 'round for holiday celebrations, for instance. Or on those special days when you're all together on holiday. What fun, to prep for special days like that! And the scents of those breakfast foods wafting from the kitchen only adds to the joy of the holiday!

What's Your Christmas Morning Tradition?

In our family, I would bake cinnamon rolls and make hot chocolate, which we would enjoy as we opened our gifts.

Some families open their stockings, then eat breakfast before diving into the bigger gifts.

Some folks open all the gifts with no food on their minds at all, only to gobble down a big meal after-the-fact.

No matter how (or when) you set the table on Christmas morning, what you place on it is key. You want foods that remind the kids (and kids at heart) just how special and magical that day can be.

Christmas Morning with the March Sisters

Few Christmas scenes have stayed with me quite like the opening of Little Women. The March sisters wake on Christmas morning expecting their own simple celebration, only to learn that the Hummel family nearby has almost nothing to eat. At Marmee's urging, the girls carry their breakfast to the hungry family instead.

I've loved Little Women for most of my life, but the older I get, the more that scene means to me. The girls don't have an abundance themselves. That's what makes their generosity so beautiful. They take what was meant for their own Christmas table and willingly carry it to someone who needs it more.

Finding Ourselves in the March Sisters

This story became personal for me long ago. As a girl—and later as a writer—I identified with Jo. How could I not? She's opinionated, imaginative, determined, always scribbling away at her stories, and trying to figure out where she belongs in the world.

Over the years, Little Women became part of our family's story, too. My daughters and I could see pieces of ourselves in the March sisters, and I've even had the joy of directing the story as a play. These weren't simply characters on a page anymore. In a funny way, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy began to feel like old friends.

Maybe that's what the best stories do. We don't simply read them. We move in.

A Christmas Breakfast Worth Sharing

That's why I can't put together a collection of Christmas breakfast recipes without thinking about that morning at the March house.

Cinnamon rolls, breakfast casseroles, breads, muffins, pancakes—these are wonderful things to serve the people gathered around our own tables. But Little Women offers a gentle reminder that some of the sweetest Christmas memories are made when we make room for someone else.

So as you're choosing something delicious from this collection for Christmas morning, perhaps make a little extra. Take a pan to a neighbor. Carry muffins to someone spending Christmas alone. Send cinnamon rolls home with a family who could use them.

After all, a Christmas breakfast is wonderful. A Christmas breakfast shared with someone who needs it might be even better.

The Recipes in this Post

They came up with quite the list, let me tell you! I'm tempted to bake a bunch of these! No matter which one(s) you choose for your big day, your guests are sure to leave happy and full.

And now, without further ado, let's make some Christmas morning bakes!

The Reason for the Season

Before we go, I want to take a moment to remind you of the reason for the season: Jesus, the Christ child, came as a babe in a manger, the King of heaven, come to earth as a tiny babe!

To learn more about that story, several writing friends and I have created a little devotion called The Road to Bethlehem, which you can listen to on YouTube. You can even download your own copy from my author site!
