Soft Butter Rolls from Scratch

Looking for a Really Soft Pull-Apart Roll Recipe?

Soft Butter Rolls from Out of the Box Baking.com

I don't know about you, but I love a really light and fluffy roll with a buttery crust. Today I was searching for something a little different from my usual Milk Bread recipe or yeast rolls.

Both of those are good, but I wanted something with a distinct butter flavor.

I stumbled across this recipe on the Thermomix Cookidoo site. The measurements were in grams, (which is fine for those of us with a Thermomix machine, but a lot tougher for those of you who don't own one).

I decided to convert the recipe from grams to ounces, and then to cups and spoons. (Whew! A process!)

Let's Make Some Dinner Rolls from Scratch!

Afterwards, I made the Soft Butter Rolls to make sure the recipe was good enough to post.

The words "good enough" are an understatement, y'all! This is one of those experiments that worked so well that I ate two of them without even pausing to breathe.

I had to bundle them up and drive them to the grandkids right away, while they were still warm. I needed to get them out of my house, for sure! Otherwise I would keep eating. . .and eating. . .and eating.

They're that good.

I'll be making these again, I can promise you.

I told my daughter today that there's no reason for our family to buy dinner rolls any more. Now that I know how easy they are, I can make them from scratch for our next gathering.

Soft Butter Rolls Ingredients

You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. For now, here's a quick look at what you'll need. These are such simple ingredients. No doubt you have them on hand in the kitchen right now!

  • warm buttermilk (or warm milk with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or lemon)
  • warm water
  • granulated sugar
  • dried instant yeast (one packet)
  • room temperature salted butter (plus more for brushing)
  • large egg
  • all purpose flour (plus more for your workspace)
  • bread flour
  • salt

How to Make these Soft Butter Rolls

Combine warm buttermilk, warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl and mix well. You can use the bowl of a stand mixer or a regular mixing bowl.

Allow to rest for five minutes to activate yeast.

Add butter, egg, flour(s) and salt. If you’re using a stand mixer, you’ll want to use the bread dough hook to knead the bread at medium speed for three minutes.

You can also choose to knead by hand for three minutes. Just prepare a work surface with additional flour first!

Place soft dough on floured work space and roll into a ball, adding more flour if necessary.

Divide into 20 balls. (You can weigh with a kitchen scale if you like to get equal pieces.)

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Place dough balls onto baking sheet “almost” touching, but not quite.

Brush with butter.

Let dough go through a second rise in a warm spot for 15 minutes.

Place in preheated 375 degree oven to bake for 14 - 15 minutes or until light golden brown.

You can brush top of the rolls with more melted butter but if you do this you'll want to sprinkle on a few more sesame seeds.

Eat these soft buttery rolls while warm. I slathered more butter inside of mine.

What to Expect from These Soft Rolls

These fluffy dinner rolls really live up to their name, folks! They're tender and buttery on the outside and soft as a feather on the inside. Talk about a great recipe!

I loved them warm from the oven with butter. I think they would also be great with preserves. (Yum!)

These homemade yeast rolls are terrific by themselves but I think they would also be great as sandwich bread. Slice in half and serve with ham and cheese.

The possibilities are endless!

These homemade rolls will be great for holiday dinners, special occasions, or a random Tuesday night! (Is there anything better than homemade bread?)

This recipe reminds me a little of my Honeycomb Buns. They're basically a pull-apart roll with caramel on top. You could use this recipe and pour a half cup of jarred caramel sauce on top, if you like. Throw on a few pecans or almonds for extra crunch!

If you like these rolls, you're also going to love my yeast rolls. They're delicious too, but with a firmer exterior.

My Tangzhong Milk Bread recipe is another soft, light recipe you're bound to love.

The Cinnamon Rolls recipe on this site is a great one, but you know what? I think this Soft Butter Rolls recipe would make a great base for cinnamon rolls, too!

That’s it for this post, friends! I hope you enjoyed this delicious recipe for Soft Butter Rolls. Homemade dinner rolls are an amazing addition to any meal and these are the best dinner rolls I've had in ages!
