Imagine tender chocolate cake layered with a creamy vanilla filling, cut into perfect little rounds, and coated in a rich chocolate shell. They're everything you love about cookies and cream—but dressed up for a tea party, bridal shower, dessert table, or special occasion.
The best part? They start with a simple boxed cake mix.
These petite treats are surprisingly easy to make and absolutely stunning when displayed on a cake stand. Whether you're hosting a party or simply looking for a fun baking project, these Oreo-inspired petit fours are guaranteed to steal the show.
Perfect for a Crowd
I took these to my Lunch Bunch small group from church, a group made up of mostly senior citizens. I wasn't sure how they would be received but let's just say I came home with an empty container! In fact, the group's members reached for to-go containers from the restaurant to haul off their goodies. (That makes my heart so happy!)
I knew that folks loved my original cake-mix petit fours (the strawberry lemonade version) but I wasn't sure how they would respond to these. Turned out, they loved them!
You're going to flip over this delicious (fancy!) dessert, too!
Why You'll Love These Oreo Petit Fours
- Start with a boxed cake mix
- Elegant and party-worthy
- Perfect bite-sized desserts
- Rich chocolate and vanilla flavor
- Great for weddings, showers, and tea parties
- Easier than traditional petit fours
What Are Oreo Petit Fours?

Traditional petit fours are small layered cakes coated in a sweet icing or poured fondant.
This Oreo-inspired version takes a slightly different approach. Soft chocolate cake layers are sandwiched together with a creamy vanilla filling, cut into rounds, then coated in a smooth chocolate shell for a cookies-and-cream-inspired dessert that's both elegant and fun.

How to Make Oreo Petit Fours
These sound (and look) fancy, but they're actually pretty straightforward. Here's how you're going to make them.
Step One: Bake the Cake Layers
Prepare the chocolate cake batter according to the recipe card below and bake in a 9x13-inch pan. Allow the cake to cool completely, then refrigerate until chilled. A cold cake is much easier to cut cleanly and handle during assembly.

Step Two: Cut the Cake Rounds
My cake baked a bit thicker than expected, so I leveled it before cutting the rounds. Once leveled, use a round cookie cutter, cut circles from the chilled cake. Pair the rounds according to size so they'll stack neatly. Set aside.

Step Three: Prepare the Filling
Make the Oreo filling and transfer it to a piping bag. This will make assembly quick and easy. Cut the end of the bag wide enough for any chunks or Oreo to come through.

Step Four: Assemble the Petit Fours
Pipe a generous swirl of filling onto half of the cake rounds. Top with the remaining rounds, gently pressing them into place to create miniature sandwich cakes.

Step Five: Freeze Until Firm
Place the assembled cakes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 30 to 60 minutes. This step is important because it helps the cakes hold their shape during dipping.

Step Six: Prepare the Chocolate Coating
Melt the chocolate and oil, stirring until smooth and glossy.

Step Seven: Coat the Petit Fours
Working one at a time, dip each frozen cake into the melted chocolate. Use a fork or dipping tool to lift it out, allowing excess chocolate to drip away before placing it on parchment paper.

Step Eight: Decorate and Serve
Before the coating sets, drizzle with white chocolate and sprinkle with crushed Oreo crumbs, if desired. Allow the coating to harden completely before serving.

Plate to serve
I happened to have a macaron stand left over from my granddaughter's recent graduation party and thought it would be fun to put the petit fours on that. Gorgeous!

You don't have to go fancy. Any platter or plate will do!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these ahead of time?
Absolutely. In fact, petit fours are often easier to make ahead because freezing helps with the coating process.
Do they need refrigeration?
They can sit out for several hours, but store leftovers in the refrigerator.
Can I freeze Oreo Petit Fours?
Yes. Freeze in an airtight container for up to two months.
Can I use store-bought frosting?
You can, but a homemade filling will give the best flavor and texture.
