Who is Mary Berry?

Fans of The Great British Bake Off know Mary Berry, of course. She co-hosted the show for years with Paul Hollywood, another baking pro.

Mary is the author of over 75 cookbooks and definitely knows her stuff, (to the point where many of the bakers on the show were a bit intimidated by her)! So, when I saw this simple cookie, I thought to myself, “If it’s good enough for Mary Berry, it’s good enough for me.”

I happened to be baking several other items on that same day, but there’s a story about how I landed on this particular recipe. I had run out of all-purpose flour and only had self-rising. So, I went in search of recipes that called for self-rising flour.

Mary Berry's Fork Biscuits for the Win!

And that, my friends, is how I landed on this particular recipe.

It looked simple.

It looked quick.

It called for self-rising flour.

And I loved the idea that this British cookie is called a "biscuit." Makes it feel fancy.

So, I baked up a back and took them to the grandkids, who gobbled them down!

Without further ado, I give you, Mary Berry’s Fork Biscuits!

Mary Berry Fork Biscuits Ingredients

You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need. These are simple ingredients you might already have on hand. If you don’t happen to have self-rising flour, don’t fret! You can make your own self-rising flour, by combining 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon of salt.

  • 7 tablespoon room temperature butter (salted or unsalted, your choice)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 cup self-rising flour

That’s it! Just three ingredients!

How to Make Fork Biscuits

These come together so easily. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Place parchment paper on a cookie sheet and set aside.

Place butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beat until light and fluffy.

Work in the flour, mixing only until combined.

Roll into balls (about the size of walnuts). The recipe should make 16 balls of dough. Place on lined baking sheet.

Dip a fork in water and press down into the dough to form an imprint on each ball.

Place in preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cookies are a light golden color.

Remove and place on wire rack to cool.

Serve and enjoy!

Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature up to three days. You can freeze this dough to bake the cookies later on if you like.

What to Expect from These Cookies

If you love a lovely little butter cookie, you’ll enjoy these. They’re simple and come together in minutes, which is always delightful. These would be great to bake with kids, because they’re super easy. (You can even mix the dough by hand if you don’t want to use a mixer.)

Ways to Dress up this Recipe

Roll in Sugar: You can roll the dough balls in sugar before pressing down with the fork, if you like.

Roll in Sprinkles: Want to make a colorful butter cookie? Roll in sprinkles and skip the fork imprints.

Sandwich them together. Make some of my dreamy buttercream and spread it between two of the cookies. (Yum!)
