If you love a great Rice Krispie treat but you’re celebrating the Christmas season, you can really bring the cheer with these delightful little edible ornaments!
What are Rice Krispie Treat Ornaments?
I’ll be honest: I didn’t set out to make Rice Krispie ornaments. I was tasked with bringing sweet treats for an inner city outreach event, a Christmas program. I decided that Rice Krispie treats would be easy enough. But I also had popcorn balls on my mind. I loved the idea of having something round (and individually wrapped) that I could put at each place setting.
I stumbled across a picture of Rice Krispies shaped into balls and realized I’d hit the jackpot. The idea of giving away individual “ornaments” was just too good to pass up! So, that’s exactly what I set out to do.
Without further ado, let’s make some Rice Krispie ornaments!
Rice Krispie Treat Christmas Ornament Ingredients
You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post, but here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need! These are simple ingredients you can easily find at your local grocery store.
- 6 cups Rice Krispies
- 3 tablespoons butter
- More room temperature butter for buttering your hands.
- 10-ounce bag miniature marshmallows
- ½ cup mini M&MS (red and green)
- Green gel food coloring
In addition, you’ll need plastic wrap and ribbons or pipe cleaners
How to Make Rice Krispie Christmas Ornaments
These come together so quickly and require no stovetop or oven time.
Place a large piece of waxed paper on your workspace. You’ll need it later.
Place butter and marshmallows in a microwave safe dish.
Microwave for one minute and stir.
Microwave for a second minute and stir.
If the butter is melted, you’re ready to go. Just stir really well to turn the marshmallows into a smooth paste.
Add a couple drops of green coloring gel. Stir well.
Add the Rice Krispies, half at a time, stirring well.
Add in the M&Ms and stir well.
Make sure your hands are clean and buttered for this next part.
Grab a handful of the Rice Krispie mixture and shape it into a ball. While it’s still warm it might be sticky and difficult to work with, but you can come back later and press them together even more once they’ve thoroughly cooled.
Roll all of your Krispies into tight balls and allow to cool completely.
I used Press and Seal to wrap my ornaments but you can use regular cling wrap if you prefer.
I recommend a 12 x 12” square of cling wrap for each ornament.
Twist at the top and tie off with a ribbon. I opted to use pipe cleaners.
Serve and enjoy!
I took mine to a party. (I actually made four batches so that I could have 60 ornaments.
You can save these to eat later. They should stay fresh for 4-5 days.
What to Expect from these Delicious Treats
Can I just telling you. . .the kids weren’t the only ones who loved these ornaments. The grownups at the party loved them so much that I caught some of the ladies sneaking the leftover ones home! They’re light, crisp, sweet, and that tiny “bite” of chocolate from the M&Ms is sheer perfection. I’m so delighted with the way these turned out and I’m sure you will be, too!
Variations on this Recipe
Not a fan of chocolate? Add any of the following to the Rice Krispie treats:
Peanuts: This will add a salty crunch. Just make sure you don’t have any peanut allergies in your group.
White Chocolate Chips: These would be fun if you don’t have M&Ms.
Craisins: This would add a fun holiday flavor and the color would be nice.
Mini marshmallows: You can add more marshmallows to the Krispies before rolling into balls. (These aren’t intended to melt.)
