Did you know that orange and chocolate were destined to go together? It’s true! And if you love that delectable mergence of flavors you’re going to flip over these simple orange chocolate chip cookies!
Orange and Chocolate? Really?
The year was 2007. I was attending a bridal shower at a friend’s house. The hostess walked by with a tray of cupcakes and offered me one. I looked at the fudgy frosting and said, “Sure!”
One bite in, I realize there was more to that cupcake than chocolate. The cake, itself, was bright. Citrusy. Filled with tangy flavor.
Orange. I was eating an orange cupcake. And the fudge frosting was the most amazing complement to that citrus flavor I could have imagined.
Jump ahead a few years. Okay, a lot of years. Seventeen, to be precise. I’m still a huge fan of chocolate and orange together. I recently made a chocolate cookie with candied orange peel. They were delicious. But, honestly? I wanted something with more orange than chocolate.
And that’s how I stumbled upon this idea for these orange chocolate chip cookies.
The Perfect Gift
My step-mom Jeanene recently gifted me a bunch of baking supplies, including a ton of cake mixes. She knows this blog is built on an out-of-the-box foundation and that I love to start many of my recipes with a box of cake mix.
There were two boxes of orange supreme cake in the mix, and I used one of them to make cranberry orange scones, which turned out beautifully! I gave those away to a friend just yesterday, in fact.
Today? Well, I thought about that other box of orange cake and it hit me: Make cookies.
Cake Mix Cookies are Simple and Delicious
Did you know you can take almost any type of cake mix and turn it into a cookie? I’ve done it more times than I can count! German Chocolate cookies. Red Velvet Cookies. Butter pecan cookies. Peanut Butter Cookies. You name it, I’ve probably tried it!
It’s a simple matter, to turn cake mix into cookie dough. Add a little butter and a couple of eggs, and. . .voila! The perfect dough. What really sets these apart, though, are those semi-sweet chocolate chips and a simple orange glaze.
More about that later! For now, let’s look at what you’ll need to make these cookies!
Orange Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients
You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need. These are simple ingredients you can find at any grocery store.
- 1 box Duncan Hines Orange Supreme cake mix
- 2 room temperature eggs
- 1 stick of room temperature butter
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
That’s it! Just a few simple ingredients.
How to make Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies
These come together so easily!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place parchment paper on two cookie sheets.
Put cake mix in a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment.
Add eggs and room temperature butter.
Mix well.
Mix in chocolate chips.
Use a cookie scoop to scoop out balls of cookie dough.
Bake for 10 - 12 minutes or until the cookies are set. You don’t want to over-bake.
Remove and place on wire rack to cool.
While the cookies are baking, make your glaze. Place powdered sugar in a bowl and add orange juice. You might need to adjust the amount of juice to get the consistency you desire.
Once cookies are cooled enough to handle, dip the tops into the glaze and place back on the cookie sheets.
Allow to set up for several minutes.
Serve and enjoy.
Store leftovers at room at temperature in an airtight container. They should stay fresh for 3-4 days. You can freeze these cookies to eat later. You can even freeze the dough to bake later if you like.
What to Expect from These Cookies
I can’t tell a lie, y’all. I ate one before it was even fully cooled. I just couldn’t wait. The orange cookie was divine. Even by itself it would’ve been good. But those semi-sweet chocolate chips? They sent me reeling back in time to that day when I tased this orange-chocolate combination for the very first time. The icing on the cake, though? It was the icing (er, glaze) on top. The orange glaze simply took this cookie over-the-top! I think you’re going to agree that these are (truly) one of the finest cookies out there!
Variations on this Recipe
This cookie is perfect as-is, but you know me: I’m always thinking of other ways to change things up. Here are some ideas:
Orange zest: Top with a little orange zest on the glaze. (Yum!)
More chocolate chips: You can add mini chocolate chips on top of the glaze if you like.
Instead of orange glaze, drizzle with chocolate, like I do with my butterfinger cookies.
Not a fan of chocolate with your orange? No problem! Use Craisins. You might consider soaking them in a little water for a few minutes before using them, so that they plump up. You could use fresh cranberries, if you prefer.
