Stuffed French Toast? Why Not?
I’ve recently discovered “stuffed” French toast. Yesterday I tried my hand at PB&J. Today I decided to make a sandwich for lunch and opted for ham and cheese. Why not turn it into a French Toast sandwich. Sounded easy enough.
Turned out, it was! In fact, this process was so easy that I decided to share it with you. This will make a delicious lunch or dinner for you but it’s fancy enough that you can even serve it to guests!
Ham and Cheese Stuffed French Toast Ingredients
You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post but here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need. These are simple ingredients you might already have on hand.
- 4 slices bread (your choice)
- 1 cup grated cheese (your choice)
- 6 slices ham lunchmeat
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
How to Make Stuffed French Toast with Ham and Cheese
This comes together so easily!
Whisk together the eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Set aside.
Place butter in skillet.
Build Your Sandwich:
Lay out bottom piece of bread. Add cheese.
Add ham.
Add more cheese.
Add top piece of bread.
Repeat for the second sandwich.
Turn on the heat under the skillet. You’ll want to cook this over medium heat. Make sure the butter is melted before you begin. (I use one tablespoon at a time of the butter, since my skillet isn’t very big.)
Gently dip the sandwich into the egg mixture. Flip carefully (don’t let the ham and cheese fall out) and coat the other piece of bread.
Place sandwich into the pan of melted butter. It should sizzle. If it cooks too quickly, turn down the heat.
Cook until golden brown and then flip.
Cook on the other side. (Check to make sure the cheese is melted and the ham is getting warm.)
Place on a plate.
Cut in half.
Serve and enjoy!
What to Expect from this Stuffed French Toast
I’ll be honest: I thought this would taste like a typical grilled cheese. I was wrong! The French Toast element completely sets it apart. The bread was soft and eggy, loaded with flavor and texture. Using the butter in the skillet made it rich and decadent. I absolutely loved it. And the ham and cheese inside? That was delicious, too!
Variations on this Recipe
I love ham and cheese but there are so many other ideas floating around in my head. Here are a few!
Roast beef: Use sliced roast beef and provolone cheese. This would be a great sandwich for dipping in au jus.
Chicken, bacon, ranch: Why not? Fill the center with sliced chicken, bacon, and ranch dip, then fry as usual.
Turkey and Swiss: Yum. This would be a delicious combination.
Sausage and egg: Cook ground sausage and scrambled eggs, then stuff your toast with the flavorful combination.
No matter how you serve it up, this savory French toast will really hit the spot!
That’s it for this post, friends! I hope you enjoyed this delicious recipe.
