Most Delicious Banana Pudding Pie

If you love banana pudding, but you’re looking for a homemade version, this is the recipe for you! This is an honest-to-goodness banana pudding in pie form, and I’m going to show you how to make it from scratch!

Banana Pudding from Scratch

If you’re from the south like I am, you probably love your banana pudding. We enjoy it a variety of ways, but traditionally it’s made in a 9×13-inch dish or as a trifle. And most often you’ll find that people make it with instant pudding.

That’s fine. Instant pudding can be delicious. But for this recipe we’re going to make our own homemade custard to add to the sweet bananas. And, instead of topping it with whipped cream, we’re going to take things a step further and use meringue.

I know, right? Yum!

If you like the boxed pudding version you’re really going to love this one. It will make you feel like you’re in your grandmother’s kitchen once again, enjoying a tasty treat she’s made, just for you.

From Scratch Recipes Aren’t Always Hard

In fact, this one is downright simple! I was kind of astounded at how quickly and easily it came together. I thought it might be good to mention at this point that I found this recipe online at allrecipes.com.

I happened to have three speckled bananas. (This is how many of my adventures begin.) So, I made up my mind to make this recipe. And boy, am I glad I did! I’m also glad that I opted to go homemade, (though I had the boxed pudding on hand and could have gone that route, too.)

The idea of making it from scratch was so tempting. Is there anything better than homemade custard?

Banana Pudding Pie Ingredients

You will find a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. Here’s a quick peek at what you’ll need to make this banana cream pie recipe. These are such simple ingredients!

  • 2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs
  • 3 ripe bananas, sliced into 1/4 inch slices
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (whole milk)
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 egg whites
  • ¼ cup white sugar

Note: You will also need A 9-inch pie plate. Also, wait to slice your bananas until just before you need them. You’ll want fresh bananas, so don’t let the slices sit out too long before using.

How to Make this Delicious Banana Pudding Pie

If banana pudding is one of your favorite desserts, you’re in luck, folks! This is a simple process, y’all! It comes together very quickly.

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you haven’t already done so, grind your graham crackers to crumbs.

Make the custard:

Combine sugar and flour in heavy medium saucepan. Whisk well and add half of the milk.

Mix the egg yolks and work into the sugar mixture.

Slice three bananas in thin slices.

Place half of the crumbs in the bottom of a pie pan. (I used my pretty white pie dish with scalloped edges.)

Store in airtight container (or tightly covered in plastic wrap) in refrigerator up to three days.

What to Expect from this Delicious Banana Pudding Pie Recipe

This is completely different from the traditional icebox banana pudding (made with instant pudding and Nilla wafers). So, it took me a minute to realize that this baked version is truly more pie like.

I love homemade custard, so that’s always yummy for me. And I love bananas. I was so happy to have graham cracker crumbs on hand.

More than anything, I was thrilled with the ease of this one. You will be, too!

Ways to Vary this Recipe

Whipped Cream in place of meringue: I’m a huge fan of cream pies. (Coconut Cream is my favorite!) So next time I’ll probably use whipped cream in place of the meringue. Cool Whip is a great option if you don’t want to make your own whipped cream from heavy whipping cream.

Store-bought graham cracker crust: I’m thinking it would be easy to buy a pre-made crust and just do this pie in a single thick layer. Yum! If I go this route I’ll probably use whipped cream so it doesn’t have to go into the oven at all. (Note: You can bake store-bought graham cracker crust. . .but why would you want to?) This would be the way to go for an easy banana cream pie.

Caramel: I think this pie would be terrific with a layer of caramel sauce. Caramel and bananas? Yes, please!

Vanilla wafers: If you like original classic banana pudding, you can adopt this recipe to be similar by adding vanilla wafers in place of crushed graham crackers. A nilla wafer crust would be delicious!

Flaky pie crust: This is another easy option. Use a traditional pie crust (baked) with the ingredients layered on top.

Shortbread cookie crumbs: You can use shortbread cookies (like Chess Men) in place of vanilla wafers. You can even use Biscoff cookies, as I did in my no-bake banana pudding recipe.
