Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins with Streusel (Cake Mix Recipe)
Make easy pumpkin chocolate chip streusel muffins with a boxed cake mix! Tender bakery-style muffins topped with buttery brown sugar crumbs.

There's something about a crisp fall Saturday that makes me want to spend the whole day in the kitchen.
The air is cool, the puppies are running in and out of the house, happily playing in the backyard, and I'm surrounded by mixing bowls, muffin pans, and the wonderful aromas of fall baking.
Today I'm baking for a family from church that's going through a difficult season. Sometimes you just want to do something to let people know they're loved, and for me, that usually means heading into the kitchen.
A homemade treat might not fix what someone is going through, but it can certainly bring a little comfort.
And these easy pumpkin chocolate chip streusel muffins seemed like just the thing!

Made with a boxed yellow cake mix, these bakery-style muffins are tender, beautifully domed, filled with chocolate chips, and topped with a buttery brown sugar streusel.
Best of all? They're incredibly easy to make!
A Little Fall Comfort from My Kitchen

I've always believed there's something special about sharing homemade baked goods.
Maybe it's because so many of my favorite memories involve family, friends, and food. Or maybe it's simply because a warm muffin and a cup of coffee can make even an ordinary day feel special.
Whatever the reason, I love having simple recipes I can whip up when someone needs a little encouragement.
And because these muffins start with a boxed cake mix, they come together without a lot of fuss.
You don't need any fancy equipment or complicated techniques. Just a couple of mixing bowls, a muffin pan, and a handful of pantry staples.
The result is a batch of gorgeous muffins that look like they came straight from a bakery.
Why You'll Love These Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins
There are so many reasons to love this easy fall recipe!
- They start with a cake mix. A boxed yellow cake mix makes preparation quick and easy.
- They have a true muffin texture. A little extra flour helps give these muffins more structure than an ordinary cupcake.
- They're filled with chocolate. Semisweet chocolate chips add just the right amount of richness.
- The spice is subtle. A little cinnamon brings warmth without overpowering the other flavors.
- That streusel topping! Buttery brown sugar crumbs add a delicious finishing touch.
- They're perfect for sharing. Take them to a neighbor, a church friend, or someone who could use a little encouragement.
Ingredients for Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Streusel Muffins

You'll find a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post, but here's a quick look at what you'll need.
For the Muffins
- 1 box (15.25 ounces) yellow cake mix
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup pumpkin purée (or mashed sweet potatoes)
- 2 large eggs
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips
For the Brown Sugar Streusel
- ⅓ cup light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small cubes
A quick note: Be sure to use plain pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling contains added sugar and spices that will change the finished recipe. I went with mashed sweet potatoes, since I'm allergic to pumpkin.
How to Make Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins with Streusel
These muffins come together quickly, so go ahead and preheat your oven before you begin.
Step 1: Prepare Your Muffin Pan
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a standard 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners or lightly grease the muffin cups.

Step 2: Combine the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the yellow cake mix, all-purpose flour, and cinnamon.
Make sure everything is evenly combined.
Step 3: Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the pumpkin purée, eggs, vegetable oil, and milk until smooth.

Step 4: Make the Muffin Batter
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until everything is combined. Avoid overmixing. The batter should be thick and scoopable rather than thin and pourable.

Fold in the semisweet chocolate chips.

Step 5: Fill the Muffin Cups
Divide the batter evenly among the 12 prepared muffin cups. These are generously sized muffins, so the cups will be fairly full.

Step 6: Prepare the Streusel
In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingertips, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Sprinkle the streusel generously over the muffin batter.

Step 7: Bake
Place the muffin pan in the preheated 375°F oven. Bake for approximately 20–24 minutes, checking around the 20-minute mark.
The muffins should be beautifully domed, with set tops and golden-brown edges.

A toothpick inserted into the muffin portion should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Avoid testing directly through a melted chocolate chip.
My first batch baked for exactly 22 minutes.
Step 8: Cool and Enjoy

Allow the muffins to rest in the pan for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool.
Enjoy them slightly warm or at room temperature.
What to Expect from These Muffins

These aren't ordinary cake mix cupcakes masquerading as muffins!
The added flour and generous amount of pumpkin purée help create a substantial, tender crumb that holds its shape beautifully.
The muffins rise into lovely rounded domes, and the chocolate chips add little pockets of sweetness throughout.

But the real finishing touch is the brown sugar streusel. It adds just enough sweetness to complement the muffin without making the whole thing overly sugary. And because the cinnamon is mild, you get a gentle hint of fall spice rather than an overwhelming pumpkin spice flavor.
No glaze or frosting necessary!
Tips for Perfect Bakery-Style Muffins
Don't overmix the batter. Stir only until the dry ingredients are incorporated. Overmixing can make muffins tough.
Use cold butter for the streusel. Cold butter helps create those wonderful crumbly pieces on top.
Fill the muffin cups generously. This recipe makes 12 substantial muffins with beautiful domed tops.
Don't overbake. Begin checking for doneness around 20 minutes. Mine were ready at 22 minutes.
Use semisweet chocolate chips. They balance the sweetness of the cake mix and streusel nicely.
Let them cool before packing. If you're sharing these muffins, allow them to cool completely so condensation doesn't make the streusel soggy.
Fun Variations to Try
Once you've mastered the basic recipe, there are plenty of ways to change things up.
Mini Chocolate Chips: Substitute mini semisweet chocolate chips for more evenly distributed little bites of chocolate.
Pumpkin Pecan Muffins: Replace some or all of the chocolate chips with chopped pecans.
White Chocolate Pumpkin Muffins: Try white chocolate chips for a sweeter variation.
Extra Cinnamon: Add another ¼ teaspoon cinnamon if you prefer a more pronounced spice flavor.
Pumpkin Streusel Muffins Without Chocolate: Leave out the chocolate chips and let the pumpkin and buttery crumb topping take center stage.
How to Store Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

Allow the muffins to cool completely before storing.
Room temperature: Keep in an airtight container for up to 2 days in a cool kitchen.
Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Allow the muffins to come to room temperature before serving, if desired.
Freezer: Wrap cooled muffins individually and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 3 months for best quality.
To serve, thaw at room temperature. You can warm an individual muffin briefly in the microwave, although the streusel may soften.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use spice cake mix instead of yellow cake mix?
Yes, but the finished muffins will have a much stronger spice flavor. If using spice cake mix, consider leaving out the additional cinnamon.
Can I use pumpkin pie filling?
I don't recommend it. Pumpkin pie filling already contains sweeteners and spices, which can change both the flavor and texture of these muffins.
Why add flour to a boxed cake mix?
The extra flour helps give the batter more structure, creating a sturdier muffin-style crumb rather than the lighter texture of a traditional cake mix cupcake.
Can I make these muffins without chocolate chips?
Absolutely! You can leave them out or replace them with chopped pecans or walnuts.
Can I freeze these muffins?
Yes! Once completely cooled, wrap them well and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw before serving.
How do I keep the streusel from getting soggy?
Allow the muffins to cool completely before storing, and avoid sealing them while they're still warm. Condensation can soften the topping.
